More universities are moving their infrastructure to the cloud. Their mission critical data travels with it. This brings some unsettling realities.

Your student data is the lifeblood of your institution. It may be sitting in a data center whose exact location is unknown to you. Your data may sit on servers you will never see. The server administrators may be people you will never meet.

With statements like these, how can anyone ever expect to make their student data "cloud ready"?

Join the UNC System Office for a discussion. We'll review tools and techniques you can use to meet these challenges.

Transparent database encryption (TDE) can protect your data at rest. We'll share our experiences with TDE. And we'll discuss how we handle the challenges that come with data at-rest encryption.

We'll also talk about our data-centric efforts to lower our surface area of attack. Cloning databases is a core DBA task. After cloning a database with sensitive information, you double the amount of sensitive data to protect. We look at data masking and subsetting. This gives testers access to real world data without creating a security risk.

In addtion, we'll discuss Oracle Connection Manager.  Establishing trusted pathes to databases in the cloud can be a tricky thing.  Tight controls of IP-based ACLs to databases is needed.  Meanwhile, the IPs of those databases in the cloud can change.  Find out how we use Connection Manager to solve this problem.

Join us as we discuss all this and more!
