Being absent from class can be an indication that a student could benefit from extra support, but when teaching a course with 35 or more students, it’s difficult for most faculty to know whether a particular student is absent. Online polls and quizzes during class are frequently-used approaches, but students’ answers can be submitted far from classroom seats.

ITS Teaching & Learning is partnering with faculty on campus to help students succeed. The UNC Check-In app is an Android and iOS app which uses location and Bluetooth beacon technology to confirm a student's location. After the instructor opens a check-in window, students use their university credentials to check-in.
